Yanlord Landmark is the landmark building of Chengdu--the biggest city in West China, which is designed by Tim Johnson of American NBBJ. The design is based on the mountains, shale, waterfalls and rivers surrounding Chengdu. With the illumination of four major nodes: the yellow turret balcony, silver glass wings, annex surface and embossment, the illumination design reflects the plumb night image of the building. From the warm light on the balcony to the cold light on the annex, the colors contrasts sharply with natural transition, creating a fantastic visual effect. Ergonomically, wall lighting is major illumination ways, with tube light, spot light, tree lighting, hanging-on-tree lighting and ground blue linear underground lamp, creating the light space in the entrance and the square. In the perspective of passengers, the uniform basic lighting and rhythmic accent lighting contrast finely with each other.

Nocturnal Scene of Tianxing Townlet in Chongqing Jinfo Mount2013-06-07Nocturnal Scene of Tianxing Townlet in Chongqing Jinfo Mountain

The ancient architectural complex of Tianxing Townlet is located in Bashan, a valley at the foot of Jinfo Mountain in Chongqing Municipality. Known for its mists frequent rains at night, Bashan has even become a culture-loaded image since a noted poet of the Tang Dynasty had referred to the place in one of his popular poems. The poem, titled Nocturnal Rain in Bashan, conveys a deep melancholy of a lonely traveler who was far away from his beloved: “Oh, when could we be trimming wicks again, together in your western window? When could I be hearing your voice again, all night in the rain?”
The designer attempts to create an atmosphere full of the poetic feeling by blending illumination and space.
As for specific details, the designer takes the luminance of ground on the day of full-moon as the benchmark. On the basis of that, the concept of mesopic vision is introduced. In this way, people can stand on the best visual position to fully experience the space with all senses being mobilized.
All lamps are LED. 1W LED lamps of various angles are utilized. In other words, the power consumption of the whole town with all lamps on remains at 81KW; in the midnight mode, the consumption is only 3KW. Thus, a real example of high-quality illumination project of extremely low power consumption comes into being.

Photo explanation:
Photo 1: The Tianxing Townlet refers to an ancient architectural complex of almost 1000 years history. It is of typical ancient architecture style in Southwest China. Cornice, pediment, Chiwen (ornament on roof ridge in the shape of a legendary animal), upright and gardens embody intense charms of ancient Chongqing.
Photo 2: The Tianxing Townlet, surrounded by waters and mountains, gives off unique feeling of Chongqing. The adoption of warm color makes the town more genial and heartwarming.
Photo 3: The Tianxing townlet casts itself onto the slate street, tier upon tier after rains. The 3W/m linear lamps and lanterns are hidden by the verandah of the building and the concealed 1W rail façade uplight illuminates the buildings. Meanwhile after multiple reflections, these lights illuminate the interior street.
Photo 4: The linear illuminations of the verandah provides light for the path along the riverside while the illumination of the rail façade serves as the boundary of the platform. All these render a sense of rhythmic beauty.
Photo 5: The plinth of the corridor is lightened up by two 1w narrow LEDs embedded into the upright. Such accent lighting generates great fun.
Photo 6: The gables and herringbone eaves of neighboring architectures are illuminated by 1w underground lamps, rendering a dramatic space. Please pay attention to the specialized installation node of the underground lamps.
Photo 7: The carefully-arranged illumination endows the ancient and classic architecture a sense of freshness and elegance. It is just like a cup of tea, which becomes more appealing if one takes time to enjoy.
Photo 8: It attaches great importance to the integration of the town and the surroundings. The illumination appropriately expresses the layer sense and focus of the architecture and garden. In this way, a more natural and comfortable illumination environment is created.
Photo 9: Chinese style barn lantern is specially designed. Red and yellow LEDs are adopted as the wick. The time order can be controlled to create simulated dynamic flame. The tilting eave and dynamic red barn lantern constitute the essence of architectures in ancient Chongqing.
Photo 10: The average illumination of the street in the town stands at 2 lx, which is able to create a space of mesopic vision. The light emitting surface is meticulously designed so as to avoid glares.
Photo 11: The adoption of illumination to decorate the stream, arch, feature wall and bamboo forest can create a garden of Chinese style, where each step brings us a different view.
